Director – Communications

The Silicon Valley Leadership Group (SVLG) is a business organization of hundreds of Silicon Valley’s most dynamic and accomplished companies working to shape the innovation economy of California and the nation. Founded by David Packard of Hewlett-Packard, for over 40 years the SVLG has worked to address issues that affect the economic health and quality of life in Silicon Valley. Today the SVLG Is focused on the region’s economic competitiveness with a special focus on the issues of community development, diversity & inclusion, climate change, and infrastructure.

We are currently recruiting a Director of Communications to join the organization.  The position reports to the Sr. Vice President, Media & Communications.  The position does offer some work location flexibility and due to Covid-19, the entire staff is working remotely from home offices.  Our primary office is located near Downtown San Jose and Mineta International Airport.



The Director of Communications plays a crucial role on SVLG’s MarComms team in developing and driving SVLG’s communication strategies to external audiences across platforms. The ideal candidate will create original content and help our policy teams create content. This included (but is not limited to) videos, multimedia graphics, blogs, press releases, and other materials.

As Director of Communications, you will be the primary media contact for incoming press requests and should be able to handle and assign to policy teams as requests come in. They will work with the Sr. VP of Communications and Media to shape the messaging and help push out narratives that are sticky in our local idea marketplace and strategic in their impact.

The ideal candidate will work well both independently across our Public Policy, Major Events and Business Development team to develop media strategies and content. Must also have a strong team player ethic. Someone who can see the bigger picture and their part in it within a quickly transforming department being rebuilt from the ground up.

Someone with proven communication, social media, writing, and multimedia skills. Knowledge of Silicon Valley issues is a plus. As is an understanding of the public policy and business landscape along and key technology policy issues. This position will require someone with an eye for detail and copy-editing, someone who is a self-starter and team player, and who can meet tight deadlines.


  • Manage and maintain the press relationships at the local, state and national level
  • Working with other staff members, support work to develop social media strategies and content, campaigns and event marketing
  • Work across the organization to find and tell stories across social media, video, blogs, and other channels that drive messaging and advance the organization’s policy priorities.
  • Offer new, proactive ideas for expanding SVLG’s media footprint with the ability to generate and pitch new content ideas on a weekly and daily basis.
  • Develop, draft and edit high-quality content including press releases, media advisories, guest columns, articles, op-eds, video scripts, and other digital content
  • Assist with the creation and implementation and day-to-day management of a messaging calendar with a focus on expanding SVLG’s influence nationally while still representing our brand in Silicon Valley and California daily.
  • Develop talking points, briefing memos, and other materials for meetings between senior executives, reporters and policymakers and helping prep principals for media events with practice questions and feedback
  • Edit, oversee and distribute multiple newsletters to member companies and policymakers.
  • Provide research on competitive organizations and monitoring of current member companies’ business, municipal, philanthropic, legal issues as appropriate and needed.
  • Support other departments as needed bringing their insights and perspectives into the mix of ideas,
  • May lead activities of other Communications & Media staff as required, 
  • Other duties related to the Communications & Media Department as assigned and prioritized. 



  • 3+ years of experience working in communications on Capitol Hill, Sacramento, or for a political campaign, corporation, agency, or trade association. Media outlets on a full-time basis also considered.
  • Strong multi-format writing ability.
  • At least two years managing a social media account for a lawmaker, agency, corporation, brand or other business/organization.
  • The ability to thrive in fast-paced and dynamic environments.
  • Experience in preparing and executing recurring communications priorities such as press releases, newsletters, multimedia collateral, and other items,
  • Strong strategic planning, analytical, and communication skills. Ability to distill complex messaging from policy teams into bullet points digestible by a broader audience.
  • Existing relationships with traditional and digital media outlets a plus as is demonstrated success developing and managing those relationships.
  • Experience with Cision, Meltwater, Muckrack, or similar database programs. 
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop), Canva, Final Cut Pro X, Pro Tools, or similar graphic design and video editing software are highly preferred.
  • Experience with WordPress preferred.
  • Must be able to work independently to initiate projects in coordination with the Sr. VP – Communications & Media,
  • BA/BS in Public Relations, Communications, or any related field.  An equivalent combination of education, training, and hands-on experience and knowledge is acceptable.
